    Questions to ask your child while reading:

    Fiction Books:

     

    Before Reading:

    • What do you think this story will be about? 

    During Reading: 

    • Stop and Check for Understanding every few pages. Ask who, what, when, where, why, and how questions. 

    After Reading: 

    • Retell the events from your story or chapter. 

    • Why did the author write this story? 

    • How do the characters feel? 

      • How do you know? 

    • What is this book alike and different from another book you’ve read? 

    • What was your favorite part?

    • What was the problem in the story, and how did they solve it?

    Non-Fiction Books:

     

    Before Reading:

    • What do you already know about this topic? 

    • What would you like to learn more about?

    During Reading: 

    • Stop and look at the captions and pictures. Do they help you figure out what words you don’t know? 

    After Reading: 

    • What is the main idea of the text? 

    • Retell three facts you learned from  your book or chapter.

    • Why did the author write this story? 

    • Have you read another book on this topic? 

      • How are they the same and different? 

    • What do you do when you get to a word you don’t know? 

    • What text features are used in this book? 

      • How do those features help you?
